Caring For Others
August 18th, 2022
Luke 10:25-35
Sometimes, we tend to think about being a Christian as a one-time decision. We confess our sins, believe in Jesus, ask God to forgive us, and that is it. Being a Christian seems to be saying the right things or believing the right way.
However, Jesus reminds us that part of following Him is loving other people. In fact, it is central to the Greatest Commandment: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (v. 27). We are called as Christians to care for one another, even the people we do not agree with, like the Good Samaritan cared for the man on the side of the road.
The Good Samaritan paused his journey and went out of his way for someone who did not like him. There was no promise that he would be repaid for his kindness, or even thanked, but he could not see someone hurt without helping. So we are called to sacrificially help, not because of praise or accolades, but because it is what Jesus commanded us to do.
