There Are Giant In There
August 11th, 2022
Deuteronomy 6:1-9
I grew up in a moderately religious home. We were taught to pray before meals and at bed time. My mother took us to church and Sunday School most Sundays. My father, however, never attended church or led in prayer in those days. I became an early and voracious reader. I read anything I could find. We had an old black King James Bible. One day I picked it up and was leafing through it. My dad saw what I was doing. “There are giants in there,” he said. “Really?” I asked. “Yes” (see Genesis 6:4, KJV). “Wow! Giants!” I thought. I read through Genesis and into Exodus. I bogged down before I got to Leviticus. That next Christmas my brother, sister, and I received Bibles with our names stamped in gold on the covers.
Those early experiences with the Bible sparked an interest that ebbed and waned over the years. In my late teens when I confessed my sins and received Christ as my Savior that old interest took new fire. Today with over a half-century of study of the scriptures I have a much deeper appreciation for those words, “There are giants in there.”
