Being God’s People
July 8th, 2022
Jeremiah 31:31-34
The prophet Jeremiah saw that the hearts of the people around him were full of sin. Great judgment was surely coming. Was there no hope? Although they made sacrifices and observed the worship rituals, their hearts were not right with God. They stole from the poor, shed innocent blood, lied freely, and worshipped idols. Their “devotion” to God was shallow and superficial.
They needed a heart change, a new covenant relationship with God. They needed a law that would be “in their minds,” written “on their hearts.” How could this happen? At the Last Supper Jesus referred to His sacrificial death on the cross, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:20).
When we repent and have faith in Jesus the Holy Spirit begins writing God’s Word on our hearts and minds. In our minds we know God’s will is good. We then obey God’s will because it is our heart’s desire to do so. The promise made so many years ago is also for us, “I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
