God’s Reliable Word

Luke 1:26-38
“But you promised!” “I know, honey, but things have changed.” Two hearts break. A child discovers that parents sometimes make promises they cannot keep. The parent’s heart breaks also for the innocence and trust that have been lost. Even the best intentioned and most loving parents cannot control circumstance. New demands supersede prior commitments. That’s life.
To be utterly trustworthy a person would have to have knowledge and control over all possible circumstances. Who could do that? God, that’s who.
Way back in the Garden of Eden when the serpent tempted the first man and the woman, and they disobeyed God’s clear command. There would be a future reckoning. “He” would come. “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship” (Galatians 4:4-5).
Mary could trust the promise of the angel because it was God’s word. We can, too.
