Jeremiah 29:4-13

Some scriptures have become so popular we rely on in-vogue interpretations because they fit our narrative. Jeremiah 29:11 is a good example. This verse can be found everywhere, promising that God wants to prosper you (make you rich), not to harm you (security), and give you hope and a future (He will give you the desires of your heart).

In context, Jeremiah is saying something different. After years of exile based on their own disobedience and rebellion, God tells Israel that despite their waywardness, He has not abandoned them. God called Israel out of the peoples of the world to carry the light of hope into a dark world. As a people, Israel failed, but hope was not lost. God still had plans for them.

As Christians today, we also carry the light of God through Christ into a dark world. We may stumble as a people of God, but God has not forgotten His plans to add to His kingdom through the faithfulness of His people.

I think verse 13 is more important than verse 11. It’s a good promise.
