For His Special Purposes

2 Timothy 2:14-26
I am not ashamed to say that I have a soft spot for kitchen utensils and Scandinavian-style tableware. I try hard to keep the ones I have in good shape so they look nice when guests grace us with their presence. Obviously, we have other plates and utensils we use for our regular meals.
Paul says to his mentee Timothy that if he wants to really be used by God, he needs to keep himself clean. Clean from what?
Lust, foolish arguments that only lead to divisions, and lies. Going back to Paul’s kitchen dishware metaphor, these would be the sort of things that leave grease spots and cracks on the surface. These would make us think, “I don’t think I can use these for guests.” Instead, Timothy should be faithful to the word of truth (v. 15) and pursue “righteousness, faith, love and peace,” together with those who seek after a pure heart (v. 22).
Let’s guard our hearts, keep them pure, and ask God to use us today for His special purposes.
