Ecclesiastes 12:1-8. 13-14
Have you played a game with a child? I distinctly remember playing a board game with a child. All was fine until the game was close to ending. Suddenly, he changed the rules. He went from following the game’s instructions to creating his own. Oddly enough, he won by a landslide.
Life can seem a lot like that game: we expect one set of rules and suddenly the world is turned upside down and sideways. We have plans for the future and in one tiny moment those plans can be obsolete. We may find ourselves looking for the rules that don’t change mid-stride.
The writer of Ecclesiastes points out the changing nature of life in chapter 12. Once there was the sun and light; now there is the moon and dark. What was once bright has grown dim. How do we live amid these changes? “Fear God and keep his commandments” (v. 13). As we live in a deepening relationship with God, and therefore follow His ways, we find the one thing in life that doesn’t change despite the circumstances in which we find ourselves: God.
