God’s Target

Nahum 1:1-8
God had a bull’s eye on the city of Nineveh. In Genesis 10 Nineveh was built by Nimrod. Nineveh was dedicated to Ishtar, the fertility goddess. In the Bible Ishtar is called “Ashtoreth.” King Josiah destroyed a temple to Ashtoreth, built by Solomon on “the Hill of Corruption” to the east of Jerusalem (2 Kings 23:13). God repeatedly warned Nineveh to turn from its lust and cruelty. Once His message was heeded (See Jonah). Mostly, however, it was ignored and forgotten. Forgotten by them, but never by God.
The city was at its zenith in Nahum’s day (ca. 650 BC). Yet, in less than 40 years, Nineveh is completely destroyed. God says to Nineveh, “The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him, but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of Nineveh; he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness” (Nahum 1:7-8).
God gave Nineveh ample opportunity to repent. When they did not, His judgment was devastating. Heavenly Father, may we all fall before you and seek your mercy!
