An Unforgettable Assurance
July 16th, 2021
Matthew 6:24-34
I’ve often considered Matthew 6:33 the pinnacle of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, the culminating point of His “inaugural address” describing the kingdom of God. Now my friend Lowell’s weekly encounter assures me of it. With memory waning, he approaches me each Sunday before worship and asks if I know what his favorite verse is. Since I remember from the week before, I immediately join in as we recite together: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well: (v. 33). He frequently forgets the reference, so I fill it in, much to his delight. I always look forward to our connection!
Losing cognitive ability is just one of the fears our senior adults wrestle with in life. Scripture memory becomes a tool not only to refresh those faculties but also to give assurance of truth which they cannot lose—that God will take care of them. Having sought His kingdom for a lifetime, they rest in the confidence that He will provide.
