Don’t Be Deceived

2 Thessalonians 2:1-8
These days, in my part of the world, we hear a lot about “fake news.” Popular social media outlets and other sources are now working harder to filter out news that isn’t true so that there is no deception. It is often harder to know what is real than to fall into a trap of deception.
How much more should we be cautious about who we listen to concerning spiritual things? The young church in Thessalonica was concerned about false prophets and the confusion surrounding the timeline for Christ’s return. With few resources to look to for greater understanding, it would have been easy for them to be misguided and misled. Today we have no shortage of resources both in God’s word and in the centuries of solid Christian scholarship. And yet, it seems many are easily led astray with whatever teaching might sound appealing or popular.
We, too, need to practice discernment and measure all the “truths” and “news” against God’s word and the discernment His Spirit provides us.

During this time in our lives it is hard to know the truth. I agree with the writer that we need to “practice discernment.” This is done by being in the word and understanding God’s truth. The problem I see with the popular news media outlets is not that they are “working harder to filter out the news that isn’t true,” that is not what’s happening. Those media outlets are profiting off of lies and deception by not finding the truth but propagating the lies that they want to be true but aren’t. There aren’t any news outlets that can be fully trusted, all of what they say must be critiqued, some more than others.
Please understand what I am saying, we need to be in the word of God so that this deception will be brought to light. Do not trust in the media, they lie, trust in God for he is truth.
