1 John 3:11-24

Early Christians were called and known as people of the way. Historians and writers of the day would say that they loved the stranger, the poor, the orphan, and widows as their own. They would provide for those in need, and amid persecution would stand, and often die, for their faith. The world knew the people of the way because of the manner they treated each other and how they loved the stranger.

With the lack of seminaries, Bible classes, and Sunday School, the only way they had to learn God’s ways was through the testimony of those who knew Jesus personally. It was through their love. The word of God tells us, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 John 3:16). The way God’s love is replicated in our lives is by the way we lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters, and also the stranger in our lives.

We live today in times that people need Jesus, but the only way they can see Him is through His followers.
