Your Lettuce Is Showing
February 3rd, 2021
James 1:19-27
Stacy looked in the mirror as she got ready for her speech. They had served hors d’oeuvres an hour earlier, and there it was: a massive piece of lettuce between her front teeth. She then left the bathroom with confidence, having decided that she would start a new “lettuce-in-the-front-teeth” trend that would be all the rage.
It’s absurd, right? No one would look in the mirror, discover that they had food in their teeth, and then knowingly not do anything. One of the main reasons we look in the mirror is to correct (or disguise) the flaws we may find there.
And yet, spiritually, we do this all the time. We hear a sermon or we read some verses, and then we never apply it to our daily lives. We forget what we read or heard.
The temptation is for you to do that a moment from now. Don’t do it! The Bible often shows us our inadequacy in prioritizing the needy among us and our tendency to lean toward—instead of away from—temptation (v. 27).
Our relationship with God should be evident to the world around us.
