Psalm 20:1-9
The concept of sanctuary becomes clearer when one stands in the medieval remnants of a fortress somewhere on the European continent. In the past, grain, water, vegetables, and other supplies would be stored within the high walls of the fortress. Sentries watched from the highest points and when invaders approached, the signal was given. Everyone in the community ran to the fortress and the gates were closed. Knife-sharp spikes and trenches for hot oil—they are not for the faint of heart.
A fortress is an imposing structure if you are a marauding army bent on plundering and destroying. But for those that seek refuge, for those whose very life depends upon the strength of the fortress, what a comfort to have a sanctuary. Sanctuary can mean the difference between life and death.
The psalmist gives us this context in which to place both our trust and our worship in the Lord. What an amazing reminder that the very name of the Lord our God is enough to bring us victory over our enemies.

Very comforting to be reminded of this fortress we have in God, especially in these trying times!!
