How Firm A Foundation

Isaiah 33:1-10
Few things undermine confidence more than a broken promise. Uncertainty takes the place of confidence, anxiety replaces peace, and the ramifications of that betrayal can last for years.
Isaiah found himself and his beloved Jerusalem in just such a situation, though the betrayal was international rather than interpersonal. The Assyrians had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel; now their sights were set on Jerusalem. At the urging of his advisors, Hezekiah turned to Egypt for support against Isaiah’s objections. But the treaty was broken. You can hear the bitterness in Isaiah’s opening words, when he curses the destroyer and betrayer. You’ll get what is coming to you.
When your human allies let you down and your confidence flees, whom can you trust?
There is One who will never let you down. The One whose name promises, “I will be what you need me to be,” can be counted on to keep His promises. “He will be the sure foundation for your times,” Isaiah assures, and “the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure” (v. 6).
