Deuteronomy 4:15-24
One of our family jokes is about distractions. We may be driving in the car, having a conversation, and then suddenly someone will yell out, “squirrel!” It’s really not a very sophisticated joke, but it reminds us of how easily we can be going about our day and the sudden appearance of a squirrel can distract our whole attention.
God had done several mighty deeds and miracles in liberating the Israelites from their bondage in Egypt. So many amazing deeds were done and the icing on the cake was the freedom they now had. God was leading them toward freedom that is found in a grace-filled relationship with God. They were marching on to the Promised Land.
Along the way, God spoke to them and made sure, “you saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to [them]” (Deuteronomy 4:15). God connects with His people but makes sure there is no distraction. God invites them to focus on Him and what He has for them.
Idols are the distractions pulling us away from our right relationship with God. What is distracting you today?
