God’s Awe-Inspiring Law
September 2nd, 2020
Psalm 19:8-14
In Psalm 19:1-6 “the heavens declare the glory of God.” Yet in verse 7 his attention turns to “the law of the LORD.” To David God’s law inspired the same reverential awe as the beautiful night sky. Do we feel that way? No? Then why not?
Our view of law may often be described as “restrictive” or “punitive.” Traditionally law is portrayed as a blindfolded woman with a sword in one hand and scales in the other.
David saw God’s law as “perfect, refreshing the soul” (v. 7). By observing God’s law, a person is “warned,” a word meaning “to be cautioned” or “enlightened.” God’s law keeps us from stumbling into unforeseen perils, and “in keeping them there is great reward” (v. 11). It is a mirror revealing “hidden faults,” unveiling our “own errors” (v. 12). God’s law gives us hope of freedom from “willful sin” (v. 13).
God’s law is the foundation of our freedom. Yet Jesus Christ, through His sacrifice, has set us free. Beyond justice we discover mercy (See Romans 7:4-6).

Yes. The law was given to protect us. Our laws were set up for the same purpose.
