Dad’s Tools
August 31st, 2020
Genesis 1:1-9
As a boy I was allowed to use my father’s tools if I treated them with respect and put them away properly. Far too often, however, an abandoned pair of pliers became rusty, a screwdriver was bent or broken. When my misuse was discovered I faced the consequences. I would be banned from the tools and assigned to hard labor, typically pulling weeds.
God made humanity for a purpose. When Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God’s clear command, that purpose was overthrown (See Genesis 3:16-19). We found ourselves laborers wrestling a living from a cursed world.
Only the One who originally gave the image, with its privileges, rights, and responsibilities, can restore it. “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18). In Jesus the image is fulfilled, and through Him, in us it is restored.
