This God Is Different

Psalm 34:1-8
When people ask me why I am a Christian, I tell them I am a Christian because Jesus shows us a God who actually sees what’s going on in our lives and has a plan to redeem us. This God, the God who we see in the person of Jesus, is different. Scripture paints a picture of a God who can see what is going on in our lives, who hears our cries, and who actually devises a plan for our redemption.
In Psalm 34, the psalmist praises God because this God is not like the other gods. God doesn’t just stand far off in the distance, aloof to the problems in our lives. God is near us. God doesn’t just leave us to face our problems; God saves us.
God came out of the heavens and, as Eugene Peterson notes, “moved into the neighborhood.” This God is different because this God, Yahweh, who we see in the person of Jesus, is a God who draws near to us and is with us. And for this, we should always praise God.
