God Is Merciful

Daniel 9:1-10
Daniel’s litany of wrongs and sins committed by the Hebrews is long. His confession captures the long shame of disobedience, the dysfunction it brings, and the eventual, absolute destruction brought by the consequence of sin and rebellion. But in the midst of his confession, we receive the gift of hope.
God is merciful and forgiving. Daniel’s words stand in stark contrast to the other gods and deities of the nations that threatened to swallow the people of Israel. No other gods extended grace without also expecting payment. Where other gods were warlike, lustful, vengeful, Daniel reminds us that the God of Israel is merciful and forgiving.
Maybe you, like Daniel, would confess the sins of your nation? May you have the courage to stand before God as Daniel did and acknowledge the pain and suffering caused by sin, feel the weight of that burden and that brokenness. Then drink deeply of the grace that God offers, for He is merciful, and He is forgiving.
