Take Advantage
July 2nd, 2020
Nehemiah 5:11-19
Nehemiah had to confront those among God’s people who were taking advantage of their position and harming those around them. People were sinking in debt, starving, and some were even resorting to selling their children as slaves. Once Nehemiah learned of this, he put a stop to it. He was firm in his demand that his countrymen live in such a way as brought glory to God.
Nehemiah, however, didn’t stop there. Despite the power and position that he held, Nehemiah was intentional about not taking advantage of those around him. He could have dipped into the monies and power afforded to him by his position. This, however, would have put strain on those around him. Instead, he helped feed his fellow workers, not to win admiration but to live as God called him to live.
Life is filled with the “haves” and “have nots.” This system, however, isn’t God’s way. God calls us to care for those around us; especially those who are oppressed, alone, impoverished.
How have you embraced caring for those around you?
