Hebrews 13:13-25
Mark’s a dad. He and his wife have three children, and he cannot imagine life without them. When their oldest son was born, a good friend Joel said to him, “Congratulations. You have a new identity. You are now officially ‘Nick’s Dad.’”
One of the things Mark has learned is he can’t stop being a dad. When he walks in the door, he is dad. At 2 a.m. with a sick daughter, he is dad. On Sunday during worship, Tuesday at the cross country meet, or Saturday planting the garden, he is dad.
Being a Christian is a similar kind of identity change. Our walk with the Lord must be continual as God constantly works in us what is pleasing to Him. We mustn’t get the idea that certain parts of our lives are exempt from the work of the Lord. It’s all God’s—every minute of the day and night. In our tradition we talk about holiness of heart and life. The and life part is all-encompassing as our entire lives become a continual offering of sacrifice and praise to God.
