More Than Enough

John 6:1-13
Taught that nothing should be wasted, Rebecca uses a rubber scraper to push every scrap into the serving dish. Jesus seemed to have such an attitude after feeding the five thousand; He told His disciples to “gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted” (John 6:12).
At first glance, we might wonder why Jesus cared about the leftovers. He had, himself, blessed the boy’s five loaves and two fishes to provide for the large crowd; He surely could do the same again. Why the caution? His command might show an economical turn of mind of the “waste not, want not” variety. The leftovers could be used to feed more hungry people.
The collection of the leftovers, however, provides a lesson for Jesus’ disciples and us: God provides abundantly. What would it have been like to sit on that hill and eat until we could eat no more? From not enough—five loaves and two fishes—to more than enough—twelve baskets. God will give us what we need.
