What Kind of Power?

Philippians 2:1-11
Our culture is obsessed with superhero movies. The plot is in many ways like real life: the world is falling apart and only a hero can save it. The villains are familiar too; we see them everywhere. In real life the villains’ names are Injustice, Poverty, Racism, and Greed. Their destructive powers are known throughout human history.
If the narrative were a Hollywood movie, we’d expect our savior to be clothed in a skintight suit with bulging muscles. He would wield a mighty sword.
But that’s not the Son of God.
The scene of the nativity is of a Savior clothed in swaddling clothes: humility, vulnerability, weakness.. His red cape was replaced by a bloodied robe. His sword replaced by a cross. His super-human strength replaced by weakness. His willing submission to the will of the Father became the means of our salvation.
Christ became a servant and in so doing the world was delivered once and for all.

The hope of our 2020 is the same. We overcome by picking up our cross and following Christ.
