Light In The Darkness
December 2nd, 2019
Zephaniah 3:1-8
The prophet Zephaniah described officials roaring like lions, rulers terrorizing their people, and spiritual leaders violating that which is sacred. Every day we hear news stories of conflict, war, and misuse of power.
All this evil and gloom stands in stark contrast to the words of our Advent celebrations: hope, joy, peace, and love. How can the darkness and light both be true at the same time?
Our faithful God dispenses justice in the midst of injustice.
God is already at work. The day will come when all evil ceases. But for now, as we wait, we seek the light. Isaiah wrote, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:2). Just as we see the light of one candle in a darkened room, we must turn our focus to where we find the light of God today, in our homes, in our neighborhoods, and in our cities.
