2 Corinthians 1:1-11

The apostle Paul and the community of believers at Corinth had sailed rough waters in their relationship. They crossed the unfamiliar sea of what it means to be followers of Jesus Christ in a hostile world. The old ways of doing relationships, with their worldly ideas of authority and power, no longer work when applied to life within Christ’s body, the church.

They served “the God of all comfort” (v. 3). This comfort is a shared resource among God’s people, it binds them together in abounding hope through Christ. God who has delivered them from the power and penalty of sin through Christ will prove faithful. That power to deliver does not end with salvation from sin, as tremendous as that is, but God has an ongoing ministry of deliverance. “He has delivered us . . . and He will deliver us again” (v. 10).

Propelled by this hope and the prayers of God’s people we sail on, our common course set on the Morning Star (Revelation 22:16).
