Not My Will

Mark 14:32-42
The kingdom of this world wants to define us by the things we control and command. It is impressed with power, strength, and authority. Christ’s kingdom operates in a contrary manner. In His kingdom we are defined by the things we submit and surrender. If we follow Christ it is not what we will, but what our heavenly Father wills that is most important.
There’s an old joke about a preacher who was offered the pulpit in a larger, wealthier, and more influential church. He reportedly told his spouse, “I am going to pray about it. You can start packing!” It is all too easy, when we operate according to worldly self-interest, to rationalize our will in place God’s will. The Lord himself said, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
The heart of flesh cannot be cured, but it can be replaced (See Ezekiel 35:26-27). This transformation is accomplished by God’s sanctifying grace. Like Jesus we must adopt a posture of submission and surrender. Not my will but His will.
