Can You Believe It?
November 5th, 2019
Acts 12:11-25
What would happen if God immediately answered our prayers? Would we be surprised, startled?
The believers in Jerusalem had recently lost James, the brother of John. He was cruelly executed by Herod Agrippa. Agrippa was determined to snuff out the church’s leadership. He had Peter arrested and planned to put him on trial after Passover. Agrippa assigned four, four-man squads of guards to watch over this one high-profile prisoner. Herod’s precautions were no match for the prayers of God’s people and one angel.
Peter arrived at the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark. Inside a group of believers were praying for his release. When Peter knocked on the door a servant named Rhoda heard his voice. She ran to tell the group, “Peter is at the door!” (v. 14). They told her, “You’re out of your mind” (v. 15).
If God answered our prayers today, would we be dumbstruck with disbelief? How would prayer, with humble expectation and faithful confidence, change us? How would faithful confidence change our prayers?
