God Cares About Everyone

Jonah 4:1-11
Jonah represents all the people who could write a book titled, Now If I Were God. In today’s passage, Jonah explained to God why God was wrong, and how Jonah could have done a better job. If Jonah were God, he would wipe those no-good Ninevites off the face of the earth.
Even though Jonah had grudgingly gone to Ninevah, he did not want to share his God with people unlike himself. If Jonah had a mission statement, it would be: “Share God’s message with these people so they can reject it and God can strike them dead.” Jonah had planned to tell God, “See, I told You so.”
Jonah still had an “I told you so” attitude after the people repented, but his puzzling accusation was the very reason God had sent Jonah: “I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love.”
Believers today may say they want to share the Good News, but often find themselves more comfortable among others like themselves. Jonah’s story prompts us to get out of our comfort zones and find ways to share God’s love with others.
