When The Time Comes
October 13th, 2019
2 Peter 3:8-18
My old coaches used to repeat the cliché in all our practices, “You’re going to play like you practice!” Their point was to get us to practice correctly: pay attention to the fundamentals, hustle, don’t cut corners, and so on in order that when game day came, we’d be ready for it. Practice helped us iron out bad habits, hone correct technique, and learn new skills that would fit well on game day.
2 Peter 3 is a part of an extended description of “The Day of the Lord.” Peter is describing the day when all the former things end and the new creation comes in fullness. On that day, we’ll need to be ready. So, it’s best to start living now in ways that will fit well in the new creation, for when the time comes.
Today we get the opportunity to begin now to practice living “holy and godly lives” as we “look forward to the Day of the Lord” (v. 12). Every moment spent practicing these attitudes, practices, and patterns in our lives will help ready us for the Day that leads into eternity.
