Teaching Respect
July 20th, 2019
1 Timothy 3:1-9
One of a child’s first words is almost always, “no.” They are born with a sinful nature and a desire to do things their own way. When left unattended, or even unnurtured (intentionally or not), these attitudes grow into something very ugly. They lead to constant defiance of authority and a feeling of entitlement. In the end, these children have no respect for anything or anyone.
In 1 Timothy 3, we are looking at the characteristics of church leaders. It is no surprise that the way in which a person can manage their household is taken into account. It is not the job of family to make sure that children have everything that they want, rather the family teaches respect and obedience. As family, we set the example for them. They need to know why respect and obedience are important. Children need to be taught respect for others and the importance of a special respect and reverence for God. These are not things that just happen in life. They are important life lessons that can only be taught in a purposeful way.
