Family Resemblance
July 14th, 2019
Galatians 5:13-26
Walking into health class on the first day of school, a girl heard the teacher exclaim, “Well, you have to be John’s sister!” The girl took her seat realizing there was no way to get away from people knowing who she was or what family she belonged to. She looked so much like her family.
Most of us can relate. Perhaps you were identified by looking just like a parent or sibling. Some of us have genetic traits so strong they quickly can be identified going back several generations. In the end, we can’t seem to get away from who it is we belong to.
It is exactly like that in our Christian lives. We belong to Christ. We are filled with the Holy Spirit. The fruits of the Spirit are seen in our lives and we can’t hide it: “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Gal. 5:22-23a). When we belong to Him these are evident in our lives. As we walk through life, we need to walk in the Spirit. He is part of who we are. He is not only with us, but He is in us. His fruit is evidence that we belong to God.
