Taking off the Mask
July 13th, 2019
1 Corinthians 11:17-28
We walk into the doors of the local church. Each face we pass is wearing a mask. We can’t really get a full picture of who these people really are. So, we decide to interact. The first person we speak to is not opposed to talking, but the mask on her face doesn’t budge. The next person does something different. After exchanging a few pleasantries, he removed his mask to finish the conversation. He was willing to expose his true self to someone who was willing really to interact with him. However, as soon as the conversation was over, he looked around and put his mask right back on.
Sometimes our churches are full of these same people. People who feel its necessary to pretend to be something they are not. This could be for a lot of different reasons. Some are afraid of rejection. Some don’t believe they are good enough. Some do it because they are hiding their sin. We need to remember that church should not be a place where we have to hide. In the end, no matter how much we try, we can’t hide who we really are from God.
