Life in Community
April 27th, 2019
2 Corinthians 13:1-14
If we want to know how to live our Christian life, Paul provides four concise instructions. Christianity is best lived in community. John Wesley said, “The gospel of Christ knows of no religion, but social; no holiness but social holiness.”
2 Corinthians 13 highlights this very idea. It is a message to all within the Body of Christ, the “brothers and sisters.” We are addressed by the name that identifies who we are, by our relation to one another. These words are instructive for how to live in relation to one another. Sadly, sometimes what we see in the Church is the opposite of this scriptural exhortation. At times we see fighting, anger that leads to resentment, and gossip that propagates a story. This should not be how we live! The command is clear: “strive for full restoration . . . live in peace.” We should pursue this lifestyle at all costs. It requires love, humility, grace, and forgiveness.
