Big Deal
February 22nd, 2019
Luke 19:1-10
Zacchaeus thought he was a big deal. He had a wonderful scam going and no one was going to stop him. As a tax collector, he gathered the taxes the Romans demanded from the Israelites. This of course didn’t make him a favorite among his countrymen. On top of this he could demand more than what the Romans actually wanted. As long as the Romans got what they demanded, they didn’t care if Zacchaeus gouged his neighbors.
Zacchaeus had an important job, money, and power. He was kind of a big deal. And then Jesus was passing by. Zacchaeus surely wondered who this person that crowds followed and people proclaimed. He had to see for himself. The problem was: he was a short man. Zacchaeus scrambled up the infamous sycamore tree and came face-to-face with God. Jesus called him by name and invited himself over for dinner.
Imagine! This Jesus would dare come eat with him in his home. Zacchaeus’ occupation didn’t stop Jesus, nor his actions. Jesus loved Zacchaeus and transformed his heart. That is a big deal.
