Apple of His Eye
January 19th, 2019
Acts 10:23-38
“You like him more than me!” Have you ever heard that phrase? Maybe you uttered it yourself at some point. “She’s the teacher’s pet” and therefore gets more attention than the rest of us. She’s the apple of her daddy’s eye.
From an early age we are often concerned, not just with what you like but, what’s your favorite. What’s your favorite color, song, book, meal, ice cream favor (can you pick just one?)? The child who favors blue will wear blue, color blue, eat anything blue to the exclusion of everything else.
God, unlike humans, doesn’t play favorites. His compassion and mercy is not withheld from some and given to others. Jesus repeatedly showed compassion to people the religious folks deemed unclean or unwanted.
As the Church in Acts begins to grow, Peter learns that God doesn’t look at the outside of a person—what they look like, or sound like or where they live. God is concerned with a person’s heart. Have you looked beyond your favorites to those God loves?
