We Have a Mission

Luke 5:1-11
My boys like to fish. Our set up was great: the pond was stocked and the fish fed regularly with an automated fish-feeder. At a set time each morning and evening, the fish-feeder starts up, flinging fish food into the water. Very quickly the water begins to churn with the activity of many hungry fish.
Usually it’s easy to catch fish in this particular pond, but not always. The worst is when someone else is catching them, and not you! I would talk to the boys and share this bit of wisdom: It’s always good to go and get a fishing line wet, whether you catch something or not.
Simon didn’t have the luxury to enjoy a wet, but empty, net. His life depended on catching fish to sell. When Jesus came along preaching, using his boat as a pulpit, you have to wonder what Simon thought. Then Jesus caught Simon’s attention: place your net on the other side (as if the fish were hiding from Simon).
As the water churned with many fish in his net, Jesus called Simon to share the good news with many people. “Go fish for people.” Are you following Jesus’ lead? Let’s go fishing!
