Following The Instructions
December 29th, 2018
Jeremiah 7:1-15
Some folks are the type to skip the instructions and try the “intuitive” route when trying something new. Others prefer to read through instructions and know the plan ahead of time. My father-in-law can fix almost anything. While his own father was not much of a fix-it guy, he learned by trial-and-error, schooling, and researching. His intuition comes from educating himself.
The Lord has instructions for his people. He tells the prophet Jeremiah to pass along a message, “Hear the word of the Lord,” and “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says . . .” are a few of the preparatory phrases to the instructions God has (vv. 2, 3). The prophet goes on to give the people instructions about worship, how to interact with those different from oneself, and how to live in the community. These instructions are new. If you read through the Old Testament, you will see these directives over and over and over again. It seems we humans tend to forget (or sometimes ignore) the basic instructions God gives us. We need reminders.
Do you need a refresher on God’s guidelines today? Take to heart what God has Jeremiah share with his people.
