A Psalm For All Seasons
December 9th, 2018
Psalm 18:21-31
Mary no doubt heard this Psalm as she was growing up. She may have memorized it at her own mother’s knee. That may be why we hear it echoed in her Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). She had been faithful like the Psalmist and was experiencing God’s favor. God had lifted the humble and had been merciful to his people Israel. He had brought down the powerful.
As Mary faced the challenges of an unexpected pregnancy, she would recall the words again knowing that God would help her in the days to come. As her son was growing up, she would teach him this Psalm. She would watch as he kept God’s laws and kept himself from sin. She would teach her son that God’s way is perfect and that God would be his shield and refuge. Watching Jesus’ life and ministry would give her new insight into the truth of this Psalm. The Psalm would come to mind in her later years as she watched the disciples take on leadership of the fledgling Church. When she came to die, she would take her final refuge in God.
