God My Fortress

Psalm 46:1-11
When I was a boy and trouble arose, I would look to my parents for help. Today, my parents live 300 miles away and aren’t around to help. My cell phone is a great source of help in many ways, but there is a state park near my house where I have no cell service. If I am injured on one of the park trails, I can’t rely on my cell phone to call for aid. There are many things in life to which we look in times of trouble. Yet every single one of them has its weaknesses and/or doesn’t last forever.
But then, there’s our God. Psalm 46 declares that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Even the seemingly most unshakable things in life, such as mountains and even nations, can be shaken and broken. Yet through it all, “The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” God may use means such as family, financial resources, doctors, and so on, to aid me in times of trouble. Yet I can’t look to these things first. I must depend wholeheartedly on the “God of Jacob,” who “is our fortress.”
