Our Sins Affect Others

Lamentations 1:18—2:4
No Temple. No markets. No commerce. No infrastructure. Jerusalem was a shell. It is easy for us to overlook that those left to fend for themselves in Jerusalem did so for many years. Those who could survive the famine and the elements must have lived in misery. Jerusalem would eventually be restored but it did not happen overnight. In fact, for an entire generation, those left behind would have to rely on their own ingenuity to survive. Jeremiah witnesses the horror as “children and infants faint in the streets.” Every last man, woman and child reaped the consequences of the sin committed by the priests and leaders.
Sin rips at the fabric of community. It degrades relationships and fosters anger and mistrust. The children of sin are many. God offers forgiveness of course. God will also walk with us through the consequences of sinful choices if we turn to him in repentance. But make no mistake. If we insist on giving in to sin, there will be no hiding from the consequences.
