Proverbs 31:1-9
Parents hope that when they send their children off into the world they will remember the lessons and values that they were taught. Sometimes a parent feels the need to say as much as they can to make sure their child will have the knowledge and wisdom they need to succeed in life—to do well for themselves and others—before they take that big step forward in life.
Proverbs 31 is just that. It is a mother’s wisdom being received by her son, who was a king. Her words contain a warning. Do not be distracted by things that can pull your energy and attention away from what is much more important: speaking up on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. As a king, Lemuel needed to realize that his power could be used in the right ways and for a good purpose. His position allowed him to speak up for the rights of those who were poor and oppressed. Instead of abusing his power, or ignoring the needs of others, he could use his position to make a difference.
