Created For Work

Genesis 2:1-15
Recently I retired from pastoral ministry. As the day drew nearer, I became depressed. I was not ready to retire. I felt I was too young and had too much to offer. Fortunately, God intervened, and my church retained me on post-retirement service to continue God’s work.
The Bible only mentions retirement once, in reference to the Levite priests’ service in the temple. “But at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting” (Numbers 9:25, 26). This gave me new energy and purpose–to continue in retirement assisting younger leaders to serve God to the best of their ability.
Adam had no retirement plan. God put him in the Garden of Eden “to work it and take care of it” for all eternity.
Christians have no retirement plan either. We may stop working our regular “9 to 5” jobs at retirement age, but the work of the kingdom goes on. We were created to work for God however and wherever He calls us as long as we are able.
