Proverbs 9:1-12
My grandmother had a plaque hanging in her kitchen that read: “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. ‘Til your good is better and your better is the best.” I must have read those words more than a thousand times growing up. Somehow that simple little quote pushed me to do my best. Honestly, why wouldn’t we want to give our best?
In this world there are many people and things trying to distract us from doing our best or doing what is right. Sometimes, it even seems like their intentions are good and right and their motivation is pure. On closer inspection, however, you will often find that things are not as they seem.
If we are serious about living lives of integrity and character, then there is only one litmus test that will draw the truth to the surface. Time spent in God’s Word and in prayer have to be our priority when striving to live right. Proverbs 4:23-27 reminds us to guard our hearts and stick to paths that are firm. We cannot depend on our own flawed insight alone. We have to depend on Jesus.
