The Cure For Compromise
July 25th, 2016
Revelation 2:12-17
Sometimes the greatest temptation for spiritual failure is not the violent and overt persecution that some believers face, but the temptation to make little compromises, accommodations with our sinful world, that lead us away from Christ and tarnish our witness for Him.
The city of Pergamum was a center of pagan worship, including the imperial Roman cult. Perhaps most significant for Christians Pergamum was a place known for the violent persecution of believers. A “faithful witness” by the name of Antipas became the first martyr for the faith in that region (Revelation 2:13). “Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me,” says Christ. To stand firm in faith in the face of such fearsome persecution is certainly commendable.
It was time to repent! God had “hidden manna” and a “new name” for those who would turn back to Him. Even in the shadow of Satan’s throne there is hope for revival and renewal.
