New Math

1 John 3:11-24
If we want to be more like Christ—more loving, more gentle, more compassionate and the like—we are going to have to investigate the relationship between doing what Jesus did and the impact of such conduct on ourselves.
In the upside down world of the Kingdom of God getting more requires the opposite activity. If you want to save your life, Jesus says, then lose it (Matthew 16:25-26). Need love? Start loving the unlovable. Crave acceptance? Find someone intolerable and be their friend.
There is little need to point out how contradictory this is to the entirety of how life is lived today. Making wise investments and being a good steward are all well-intentioned verbs to the modern mind. What we have learned has found its way deeply into our subconscious.
But Jesus taught us to function using a new math: one minus one equals two! This sacrificial way of living is a must for keeping His message alive today.
