John 3:1-21
We could debate about why Nicodemus came to see Jesus at night. It may have been a convenient time to speak to Jesus privately without crowds of people around. On the other hand, it also would have been a great time to see Jesus without being seen: especially by anyone who would question why a member of the Jewish ruling council would meet with a rural, miracle working rabbi.
In John 1 we see Jesus proclaimed as “The true light that gives light to everyone” (John 1:9). The condition of mankind apart from that light is spiritual darkness. In darkness all manner of evil deeds are committed. The light shows the true nature of the deeds committed in darkness. Even now that the Light has come, people still love darkness. However, those who “live by the truth” have no fear of the light.
The truth is we all come to Him out of our darkness. In the light of His presence we find forgiveness, new life, and eternal hope.
