1 John 5:1-12
There are a handful of car commercials circulating the television stations that are quite comical. “Everything that you have always hoped and dreamed about is now finally in one car.” The message is nothing new. “If you buy our product, you will finally experience the joy you have been seeking.” It’s comical because we know such promises are false. Are there very nice cars out there? Sure. Are there razors that produce a far superior shave compared to the competition? Of course. If I purchase this car and those razors, will my wildest dreams come true? Extemely doubtful.
1 John 5 reminds us of a foundational truth that can be easy for us to forget: True life and ultimate victory is found in Jesus Christ. At the end of the day, what matters most is a deep-seated hope and trust in God’s only Son. Yet, with that said, it is not hard to see the idols of consumerism and the false gods of “more” all around us. These false idols and gods assure us of life, joy, and victory, but their promises are hollow.
