Here’s My Family
January 19th, 2016
Mark 3:13-35
In Mark 3:35, Jesus’ mother and brothers seek Him out. When they found Him, the people with Jesus told Him that His family was outside. Jesus responded, “Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” For many, family is something to be cherished. For those who come from broken families, however, it brings pain. In the context of Mark 3:35, it is meant to convey the positives related to family the way God intended. In fact, Jesus’ words help us to come to terms with the reality of the kingdom of God and bring a broader understanding of what that means.
We live in a world where individualism is lauded and encouraged. Yet, Jesus makes clear that His family are those who are part of the kingdom of God. Do we really live our lives in a way where we treat each other as family in the church? Not only are we included in God’s family when we do His will, but this family is open to all who do the same. And let’s not forget that this invitation is for all people.
