Isaiah 12:1-6
Chanting swelled in the mammoth Jerusalem cathedral filled with elaborate statues and mosaic inlays. Suddenly an old woman crawled in on her knees. She pulled two coins from the folds of her ragged dress and dropped them carefully into the offering box. Nearly prostrate, she worshiped, her tearful face lifted to a nearby crucifix. She mouthed a long prayer and then crept out backwards, still on her knees.
“We leave our places of worship,” wrote John Henry Jowett, “and no deep and inexpressible wonder sits upon our faces. . . . Nothing suggests that we have been looking at anything stupendous and overwhelming.”*
We must not minimize the majesty of our God, His power, and purity. He is the great creator, preserver, and governor of all things. He is worthy of our best attention, of our deepest contrition, for He has given all for us. In spite of our sin, He loved us and made atonement for us so that we my live eternally with Him. What wondrous love is this?
