He Is Victorious
December 8th, 2015
Isaiah 11:10-16
The apostle John reports Jesus’ last word from the cross: “It is finished” (John 19:30). Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell us that Jesus died with a great shout on His lips. Jesus died with a shout of triumph. It might have seemed to some that He was broken and conquered on the cross, His life snuffed out by evil men, but this was no defeat! This was the greatest victory ever won.
What was finished? What was this shout of victory all about? The Son of God “has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10). Lifted up on Calvary like a banner, He drew all people to himself, receiving the suffering for all their sin. Every evil word, every debilitating habit, every act of violence, every vindictive thought–all vanquished forever. He completed the work His Father gave Him to do. Then God glorified Jesus with the glory He had before the beginning of the world. Hallelujah! It’s a glory we can share if we accept His redeeming grace.
